::headdesk::::headdesk::::headdesk::::headdesk:: When Tim told me about this last night, I didn't believe it. I thought, and said, "Not even Bush is this stupid." So Tim said, "We've recorded it--watch Keith Olbermann's Special Comment." (I love Olbermann--see the links--but won't watch him with Tim anymore because I can't hear the show over Tim's screaming about the stories.) So I watched the Special Comment, all the way to the end, and all I could do was repeat the punch line (and it's a real haymaker of a punch) over and over, until Tim left to feed his office cat, chuckling all the way. Then, this morning, I went to the scene of the crime, Politico.Com's Tuesday interview of Our President. In it, among many other jaw-dropping things (like saying the whole world believed in the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and "somebody" told him they were there), he told the interviewer of his big sacrifice in support of the troops and their families: He gave up golf. You heard me. Back in 2003. Our Fearless Leader gave up playing golf because he didn't think it looked right if people got word of the death of their son or daughter and there was a picture of him out on the putting green. He gave up golf as a sign of his support. To show his solidarity and sympathy, the guy who send them there to die, the fellow who didn't authorize the money for more better arms, body armor, and health care at home because he was in a mammoth pissing match with his Congress, that guy gave up golf. That guy who sent more of them in, without the arms and body armor that would have preserved their lives, with a VA medical care system that roughly resembles Daedalus's labyrinth, with surprise clauses in their sign up papers that deny them the bonuses they were promised and a salary that would keep their families off welfare, that guy, he GAVE UP GOLF. This bloody-handed murderer of tens of thousands of Iraqi and Afghan men, women, and children who were simply trying to live their days, this cheap thug who has torn up the land they need for their homes, animals, and crops, who has barred them from thousands of square miles in their own homelands and created a mess that has led to infinitely more violence day to day, whose idea of bringing "democracy" to them and erasing terror has led to daily terror where they shop, worship, drive, entertain, and sleep, That Murderous Tyrant Not Named Saddam marks his personal contribution to the mess he and his flunkies have created with no care for human life, like something he put into his collection box at school-- HE GAVE UP GOLF.Okay. I'm stopping now, because it doesn't get any better the more times I type it, and now I'm giving off the furious tears. So I stop. But really, he did it because it just doesn't look good. And he injured his knee. But it's for the troops. And their families. Current Mood: infuriatedCurrent Music: Triumphal March, opera Aida |

[2nd Doctor] - oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. After the strange greeting -- it's never good when I go somewhere new and I'm told that I was expected -- I'm taken along what look like maintenance corridors, which twist and turn. The people with me are all dressed in various kinds of green. Their hair is unkempt. Some have dreadlocks down their backs. All of them have slashes on their arms and faces. The wounds look quite old, but haven't healed. The oldest woman has the most. The skin on her plump arms looks like an old, abused apple -- it's withered and split from the cuts. We reach a large, fairly empty space. There are all kinds of shelves and cabinets here, with a sort of dishevelled shack at the rear, against one wall. This area's walls are green, shading to dark green towards the centre of the station, if my sense of direction is correct. I'm starting to be concerned about this shading. Something's influencing it. I can feel something alive, in the walls, perhaps. I think it's in pain. But it doesn't feel as if it's quite in phase with this timestream. Which leads me to put together a few other nasty little clues to form one nasty little hypothesis -- that we're not in a stable timestream. Given the preponderance of incarnations of myself, for example. I know about my next incarnation, and I can feel others of me around here somewhere. I spare a thought for my white-haired scarecrow self. I say, can you hear me? Nothing. I don't know if that means he's unconscious, or he can hear me but I can't hear him, or what. We reach the shack. The old woman opens the door, smiles her gap-toothed smile at me. "You are expected," she says, and shoves me inside. I fly forward and land on my hands and knees. This little shack is extremely untidy, dimly lit, and covered in dust. Much like my scarecrow self's laboratory, judging from what the Brigadier said to me last time I met him when he was working with that odd, tall fellow. A thin voice says, "Oh, finally. The Doctor. Second incarnation, yes?" I turn my head sharply. This can't be good. I don't like being expected. And I -- I -- Oh, dear. I just caught a telepathic whiff of something familiar, mixed with dreadful wrongness. Someone who's not entirely sane. Somehow he feels similar to what's in the walls in this area. The same sense of wistful, utter wrongness. "You're a Time Lord?" I say softly. He feels Gallifreyan, but not quite. A thin figure shuffles forward. I jump to my feet, trying to look confident, and peer anxiously through the dimness. Two of the green people are on either side of him. "Hello, Doctor," he says in a thin little voice. "I'm the Doctor, also. Fifth incarnation. We've met." He smiles, and takes another step forward. I can't help taking a step back. Me? He doesn't feel right. I have met my fifth incarnation before and this can't be him. It can't be. Something's dreadfully wrong. "Are you really?" I say, trying for my best 'delighted buffoon at the circus' impersonation. I see suddenly that there's a chain around his ankle, leading back to a thick staple in the back wall. There's also a drawing, on a sheet of cardboard propped up against the wall. A sketch of my first self, me, my third self, my fourth self, fifth, sixth, and what I assume to be the next four. Are we all here now? "Yes, Doctor," says the papery thin voice again. I'm still looking at the drawing. The faces are disproportionately huge compared to the bodies. The eyes have been crossed out on all of them except my fifth self. I swallow, and meet my own eyes again. He is me. What on Earth happened? "What happened to you, old chap?" I ask warily. Every nerve is screaming at me to run, but I have to know. I have to find out. He moves towards me, to the limit of the chain. I try to step back automatically in spite of my need to know more, but his companions take my arms and haul me forwards. I'm face to face with me. He looks terrible. He used to be such a fresh-faced young person, but now he looks as if he's been continuously run over by that horrible vehicle my third self insists upon driving. His blond hair has gone pure white, and he has two slashes on each cheek. Two unhealed slashes. Just like the green people. He doesn't feel old, though. Not as if he's aged properly, by not dying. He feels as if something's done this to him. "Ahhh," he breathes, fascinated, staring at me as intently as I'm staring at him. His hand lashes out and touches my cheek. "Contact." I yell as the pain rips through me, a kaleidoscope of images of what he's been doing, what's been DONE to him, over the last however many years. I can't hold onto any of the detail, the images are leaking from me like water, along with my thoughts, can't hold against the PAIN, but I manage with the last of my strength to call out to my other incarnations, no words, just a general cry for help... rec: we'll always have... you know Story: We'll Always Have... You KnowAuthor: nostalgia @ Teaspoon / nostalgia_lj @ LJ Rating: Adult Word Count: 1,824 Author's Summary: Inexplicably in love with Donna, the Doctor decides to relive that honeymoon he had with Romana. It goes as well as you'd expect. Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Donna Noble, Martha Jones Warnings: Swearing Recced because: Nostalgia's crack!fic is the cure-all for everything that's wrong with the universe. I'm convinced of it. At the very least, if nostalgia_lj's fanfic doesn't solve all that's wrong with the universe, it's the cure-all for everything that's wrong with New Who. In this fic, the Tenth Doctor realizes that he's in love with Donna while in the shower (yes, like that); calls Martha for advice on seducing human women; concludes that Martha may not have been serious when she suggested "lead her on with mixed signals while making her work as your servant for months at a time"; receives feedback on his Angel/Spike slash fic; tries to recreate that date he had in Paris with Romana by substituting Donna; and comes to recognize that friendship can often be more important (and saner) than passionate love. |

Rec: Back to Where You Once Belonged Story: Back to Where You Once BelongedAuthor: sensiblecatRating: All Ages Word Count: 3,408 Author’s summary: It wasn’t 1913 that changed everything between them; it was 1969. Funny, that. Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Warnings: None Recommended because: I’m fascinated by the Doctor and Martha’s time in 1969 (what did the last of the Time Lords do with himself all day with no TARDIS?), and I like to believe that the version in this story is exactly what happened. They have no money, it’s hot as hell, and there’s nothing to distract them from the problems of their relationship post HN/FoB. They're both out of their comfort zones. The Doctor and Martha have to actually talk to each other. The story does a wonderful job of probing the less pleasant aspects of their relationship and moving towards something healthier. The author has a great feel for the characters’ voices and motivations. Thoughtful description evokes the grunginess of their life so well you can practically smell the sweat. Current Mood: calm |

Information about Catholic Priests. Setting: America, probably a midwest state. Haven't narrowed it down yet, could be in the South even. When: Now, give or take a few months. In any case, it's contemporary. :> What I've tried: I've wiki'd Catholic Priests, Catholicism, Catholic Church. I've googled search terms: catholic priest, seminary school, catholic priest personal life (not useful, as you can imagine), and a whole host of variations on personal life (any suggestions for a better phrase?). I've talked to all of my Catholic friends but unfortunately none of them really know about priests on a personal level. I've called a local Catholic church but so far no dice on getting back to me. I've read through the whole religion: christianity: catholicism tag on here, and visited the links in comments (most useful: http://www.fisheaters.com/). Unfortunately, the information I need is not so much about the priest's involvement in the church itself, although any info you want to give me about that could be useful. Basically, I need as much info on Catholic priests as you can give. I need information specifically about their personal life; or their offtime, I guess. What do they wear? What are they going to do if they have some hours to themselves? Read, pray, make dinner? Aside from the obvious, what are some restrictions they have? I've got a lot of info on how the priests interact with parishioners in the church, so I'm not really lacking on info as to their professional capacity. It takes roughly 8 years to become a priest, yes, so a 31 year old priest would be on the young side, but not unheard of? Let's see, what else. If said priest was an orphan and raised in a Catholic Orphanage, would he have had direct mentoring (religious or otherwise) from the priests/deacons/etc? (Ooh, and while on topic, anyone know anything about Catholic Orphanages?) How much contact would a priest have with that of a neighboring parish? Could a smaller sized parish reasonably have just one priest and a few deacons or seminary students? I know this is a lot of stuff to muddle through, but I wasn't remotely raised Catholic and google hasn't been very helpful so far. ANY info you have on priests would probably be useful in some way or another. ETA: Sorry for yet another addition, but I can't find any info on this, either! Eeek. If the priest is the only one at his church, who would he turn to for guidance or counsel? A neighboring priest? Someone who mentored him in seminary school? |

Important cases for a 1950s law student I've Googled "1950s law school curriculum", "1950s law school syllabus", and "1950s law school classes," but haven't found a lot of good info. I have a 19-year-old law student character, circa 1954, and I'm wondering - what would be some important cases for her to study? She's in the US. She's focused on criminal law, and most of the important cases I'm familiar with take place later than the timeline allows for. And yes, I know it's highly unusual for a female student to be in law in the time period, but she's not one for tradition. ;) ETA: Further Googling has brought up this list of important Supreme Court cases, so I'm covered there - what I'm looking for now would be precedents or important cases that didn't make it to the Supreme Court. edit the second: Even more Googling brought up Hart & Wechsler's Casebook - published in 1953. She would have had access to that, but is there anything similar that is specifically focused on criminal law? |
